Geanne Pack: Fair Housing For All

National Fair Housing Month celebrates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in April 1968. This national law prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, and gender. The Act has since been amended to include protections for people with disabilities and families with children. In several states, including California, there are additional protections for marital status, sexual orientation, ancestry, source of income, and arbitrary characteristics such as age or occupation.

Geanne Pack, a Gold Nation Realtor in Roseville, CA, is a dedicated advocate for fair housing. Her mission is to bring awareness to other agents about the importance of unbiased sales practices. She serves with the National Association of Realtor’s At Home With Diversity® (AHWD).  This month, she helped educate through the Residental Real Estate Council’s Fair Housing Training and will travel to Washington, D.C., to advocate for fair housing.

Geanne has four actions Gold Nation Realtors can take today to help them become more fair agents and make housing accessible for all. 

  1. Complete The At Home With Diversity® Course from NAR to:

    1. Assess and understand attributes of diversity in local markets and their impact on the real estate industry

    2. Understand essential competencies to earn the confidence of potential buyers and sellers, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, handicaps, familial status, or national origin

    3. Build a business plan that minimizes risk and successfully services all types of clients

  2. Treat each of your clients equally. Look at the neighborhood, not the people when you take someone out.  You can’t steer people away from a community or purchase price. 

  3. Read The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein to educate yourself on the history of our laws and how to treat everyone equally. 

  4. Read Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands by Terri Morrison to learn how to politely do business with other cultures.
